Owl In The Grass (Great Grey Owl)
Another one from the archives.
Better Than Last Year ( Northern Pygmy Owl)
This image captured at a different location today. OK, when I bought the new camera I expected a slight increase in quality but nothing like this. No sharpening used and just a slight bit of noise removal on the background.
Out on a Limb (Northern Pygmy Owl)
Here is a nice environmental image with a bit better background.
Sunny Day Pygmy (Northern Pygmy Owl)
Not too sure what the weather was doing down island yesterday but it sure was nice up near Campbell River. Here one of the two pygmy owls poses for me on a sunny perch.
Not the Same Owl! (Northern Pygmy Owl)
Went to Strathcona Park near Campbell River today and managed to call in a pair of northern pygmy owls. My original intention was to get some Townsend's warblers but that didn't work out. Just on a whim I tried the pygmy call and got a response in about 60 seconds. Who knew? This image shot hand-held with the 100-400mm IS 2.
Gear Down (Surf Scoters)
A pair of male surf scoters prepare for a landing with the main group at Piper's Lagoon.
Spring Cleanup Crew (Surf Scoters)
Went to Piper's Lagoon today looking for bluebirds and ended up with several thousand surf scoters. Who knew?
Spring SInger (Northern Pygmy Owl)
Tooting at the usual location. About a hundred feet from the parking lot.
Spring Arrival (Townsend's Solitaire)
Nice to see the Townsend's solitaires back on Little Mountain again. Thought it might be a mountain bluebird at first but got fooled. Quite a crop on this one. Taken at 1200mm with the 2X converter. Didn`t turn out too bad.
Male Anna's Hummingbird
Gate Keeper at Piper's Lagoon.
Nose Dive (Golden-Crowned Kinglet)
Not much going on today so I headed out to Piper's Lagoon to have some more fun with the kinglets.
Found Another One (Great Grey Owl)
I Keep finding more good images of the great greys from last year. Guess they were never posted because of their similarity to others that are already online. Hope you don't mind. Just love these guys.
Dreaming Of Summer (Great Grey Owl)
Can't wait to get into the interior to have another crack at these guys. This image never posted from my last year's trip to Kamloops.
Happy Easter Everyone!
Wishing a Happy Easter to all of my Flickr buddies out there. Thanks for all of the wonderful comments over the years and I hope to keep creating great images for you to enjoy.
The Other Type of Kinglet (Golden-Crowned Kinglet)
There were a few of these guys bouncing around Pipers Lagoon today.
Handsome Hoodie (Hooded Merganser)
Lots of nice male hoodies down at Brookwood Marsh lately.
Better Background (Yellow-Rump Warbler)
This is more the type of background I strive for. Here is an image of the female yellow-rump warbler. Her colors are a bit more subdued than the male but still pretty.
Half And Half (Yellow Rump Warbler)
Tried to get the tree to fill the whole background on this one but as soon as I moved he flushed and I was stuck with several very clear shots of the bird on a half and half background.
Double Header (Anna's Hummingbird)
In this image a female Anna's hummingbird sits on her eggs waiting for the young to hatch. This year's nest seems twice the size as it usually is. Perhaps it was built on some remnants of last year's nest?
Cooper's Hawk in Evening Sun
Had a cooper's Hawk in the neighbours back yard just off of our deck tonight. It stayed for nearly an hour and was not fazed in the least by my noisy 1DX Mark II. This image taken at about 75 feet hand held at 840mm. Best viewed at full magnification.
First of the season (Yellow-Rumped Warbler)
Been wondering when these guys would show up. Got this yellow-rump warbler along with the first influx of swallows at Buttertubs Marsh today.
1200mm Test (Belted Kingfisher)
Went to Brookwood Marsh today to give the new camera a test at 1200mm. So far so good. Seems to focus quite a bit better than the 1D Mark 4 with the 2X on the 600mm.
Very Photogenic (Northern Harrier)
Occasionally the male harrier would pause on stumps for us to get a nice perch shot.
Female Northern Harrier
Did a wander down to the electrical station while waiting for the barn owl to show up and came across this female harrier on the fence.
Something colorful to photograph while waiting for the barn owl to appear.
Ruby Crowned Kinglet #2
Here is a more environmental image of the kinglet. It's starting to look more like spring with lots of alder catkins coming out now.
Ruby Crowned Kinglet
Saw a few ruby crowned kinglets today at Buttertubs Marsh while searching for my first yellow rump of the year.
Tight Bank (Short-Eared Owl)
You really get a good idea of how big their wings are compared to the rest of their body in this image.
Barn Owl Launch
Just realized that I missed posting this burst shot of the barn owl launching off of a post. Probably saw that vole that he eventually caught.
Grey Ghost Fly Past (Northern Harrier)
The "Grey Ghost" came by a few times during the afternoon to say "Hi".
Evening Light (Short-Eared Owl)
Tried to take this photo at a better angle. Wrestled a bit with harsh light. Didn't turn out too bad.
Early Morning Sun (Long-Eared Owl)
On this trip we found three of our long-eared friends enjoying the morning sun right out in the open. They were all on separate perches within a few feet of one another.
Grand Finale (Barn Owl)
Right at the end of the day the Boundary Bay barn owl caught a nice fat vole before disappearing into the trees once more.
Power Dive (Barn Owl)
A barn owl does a sudden dive in an attempt to catch a vole during a hunt a Boundary Bay.
Perched Shot (Barn Owl)
Here is a picture of the Boundary Bay barn owl. He just seems to magically appear around 4:15. He puts on quite the show for about 15 minutes or until he catches a vole and then disappears again into the trees.
Barney The Barn Owl
Went to Boundary Bay again this weekend and had the pleasure of getting a few photos with the local barn owl.
Heron Flight Shot (Great Blue Heron)
Here is a flight image of one of the herons at Buttertubs from today. Probably could have been a bit sharper but I didn't have enough time to readjust the shutter speed.
Heron Portrait (Great Blue Heron)
Went to Buttertubs Marsh today to check out the rather large influx of blue herons. Also a good chance to check focus on the new camera body. Seems OK so far. Will probably take a couple of months of constant use to get used to the controls and to get the most out of it though. By the way, no noise removal used on this image. Just level and contrast adjustments. Pretty good for a shadowy day like today.
Went to the B.C. Taekwondo Championchips a couple of weeks ago as I had been asked over to do a picture shoot for the B.C. Taekwondo Federation. Thought that this photo was rather interesting as the symbol on the back wall mirrors the shape of the kick that the one female competitor is doing to the other girls face. Cool!
Selective Focus (Short-Eared Owl)
I found this one rather interesting. I managed to get the head and tail in sharp focus while the wings are slightly blurred. Kind of adds a sense of motion and a bit of intensity to the image.
Sunday Edit (Short-Eared Owl)
I haven't posted much for a few days and the rain is really pounding down outside. Decided to edit some of the images from my first trip to Boundary Bay this year. Hope you like it. I got a million of them.
Fleeting Glimps (Barn Owl)
First barn owl in the wild for me. Unfortunate about the lighting and lack of eye contact. Hopefully I will get another chance on my next trip to Boundary Bay.
Grey Ghost (Northern Harrier)
Always nice to get a roosting image of the grey ghost when I visit Boundary Bay.
More Fun WIth Long-Ears (Long-Eared Owl)
Went to Ladner with the guys again today. Had some more photo fun with long-eared owls.
Wind Blown (Short-Eared Owl)
Interesting dark plumage underneath the external brown feathers.
Concentration (Short-Eared Owl)
A short-eared owl pinpoints a good location to land on a snag at Boundary Bay near Ladner B.C.
King Of The Golf Course (Short-Eared Owl)
Caught this handsome dude hanging out on a fence post at the Kings Links golf course. The green grass makes an interesting change from the regular brown environment.
Banking In The Marsh (Short-Eared Owl)
Some nice flight shots to be had on this past Monday at Boundary Bay with the short-eared owls.
Egg With Ears (Long-Eared Owl)
Our trip to the mainland wouldn't be complete without a few photos of one of these guys. This is their typical habitat. You rarely see them out in the open on a post or a stump. If you do and you get some images, consider yourself extremely lucky.
Reaching For The Wood (Short-Eared Owl)
A short-eared owl comes in for a landing on an old snag at Boundary Bay. Images like this were common today without even having to go into the marsh. Please left click for a bit larger image if you are viewing this on Flickr.
