Second Encounter (Female Sooty Grouse)
The female sooty grouse came to visit us once again yesterday. Here she is looking over the cliff and getting ready to fly to a tree where her fledged chicks are waiting. If you are on Flickr, be sure to click twice for extra flavor and crispness 🙂

Female Sooty Grouse
Went to Little Mountain looking for pygmy owls this morning and ended up with a female sooty grouse and her chicks. Who knew?

Different Direction (Sooty Grouse)
Guess I should have reviewed my images better before posting the last shot. Kind of like this one better for detail and light. You be the judge.

Grouse Greeting (Sooty Grouse)
There weren't any owls today due to the wet weather. However. I did get a nice greeting from a female sooty grouse on arrival at the parking lot.

Sooty Grouse Video
My apologies on this one. The microphone on the camera didn't pick up the low frequency of the grouse hooting very well. If you listen closely you can just barely hear it.

Turkey-Like Tail Feathers
A male sooty grouse fans his tail as part of his territorial display.

Full Body Image (Sooty Grouse)
Here is a full body image displayed at full frame. Taken at about 100 feet away with the 600mm + 1.4 teleconverter. Pretty big bird. About the size of an average chicken.

And Now For Something Completely Different
Ran into a sooty grouse on Little Mountain today. Very friendly strangely enough. Shouldn't have imitated his mating call verbally though. 840mm turned out to be a bit too close! Best enjoyed at full magnification 🙂
Full body images to follow....

Little Mountain Sooty Grouse
Managed to get a couple of quick shots of a sooty grouse just below the cliff resting in a fir tree today on Little Mountain.
