My first time ever seeing one of these guys! Photographed in the BC interior up in the mountains. Maybe two or three times the size of a bumblebee. Went looking for great grey owls and found him instead. Who knew?

Amazing to find yet another Anna's hummingbird nest at the local marsh. Not used to finding these this time of year. Anna's hummingbirds have been known to start nesting as early as mid February. Wonder how many broods she has put out this year?

A female Anna's Hummingbird sits on eggs waiting for the young ones to hatch. Hummingbirds use spider webs in their nests so that the nest will stretch to accommodate the young as they grow.
Rufous Hummingbird Profile
OK, here is one with a different head position. Notice how the gorget colors have changed. These guys are a spring and summer visitor here in Southern British Columbia. They migrate to Mexico and South America in the winter time.

A female Anna's Hummingbird feeds a single chick in a fir tree. I didn't want to use a flash on this image so I did my best with available light.
Piper's Lagoon Hummingbird
Went to visit Piper's Lagoon this afternoon just before the rain started and had a visit with the local annas hummingbird who was guarding the entrance to the walkway.

Piper's Lagoon Humming Bird
Went to Pipers Lagoon today to visit my favorite annas humming bird. He is one of the first birds singing in the early spring out there.

Here the Anna's hummingbird mother feeds one of her two hungry chicks. It's been a couple of weeks now and they are getting a lot bigger. When I last visited, neither one had their eyes open.
